The rules about (not) littering seem
to be the same in all European countries. The
differences can be found in the enforcement
of these rules. For instance, dropping your toffee
wrap in Ireland will cost you 150
euro and there are officers who are there to
collect the fine. The same offence in Bulgaria
will cost you 20 levas (about 10 euro) and
there is hardly anybody in the streets
to fine you: Sofia (Bulgaria's capital) has
no wardens.
Every so often there is a government campaign telling
people to keep things tidy, not to toss
rubbish out of car windows, etc., with catchy slogans
such as "Don't be a tosser" or "Keep
Britain Tidy" printed in places one hopes
people will see them. These campaigns are rarely
successful. Some say they are a load of rubbish!
Tourists from some countries are often irritated by
the litter in the streets of their holiday resort.
The question is: are some nations more, or less, ‘tidy’ by
nature than others? Now go to your worksheet and do
Task 7.

Here somebody throws down an empty cigarette pack
on the street and is, without a word being uttered,
reprimanded by someone else. Now go to your worksheet
and do Task
8.
