Somebody said “Human diversity makes tolerance more than a virtue – it makes it a requirement for survival”. We have about 6 billion people on earth. Every single person is very different. We tend to handle this diversity by assigning people to certain groups, for example Germans, Americans, men, women, homosexuals and so on and so forth. And then we also assign certain characteristics or certain stereotypes to these groups, for example some people believe that Germans are punctual, that women are emotional, homosexuals are promiscuous and so on. Some of these stereotypes may be true, but they generally tend to impede communication. They may impede communication when they make us assume that a given belief is true in the case of every single individual. They can impede communication when they make us interpret somebody’s behavior on the basis of a given stereotype. So perhaps it may be a good idea to go beyond stereotypes and to expect certain diversity within a group, to expect certain exceptions, and finally to tolerate such differences.
